1Blocker lets you block obtrusive ads, sneaky trackers, and annoying elements on sites. 1Blocker is a highly customizable content blocker, providing the possibility to create powerful custom rules. Some sites use techniques that make it impossible for us to block their ads using currently available features for Safari content blockers. We are proud to finally present you the new version of our app, which took us over six months to make. 1Blocker has already set a high standard and was named as the best ad blocker for iPhone.
It's hard to beat that title and make the app even better, but the X takes the legacy of 1Blocker to a whole new level. If you liked the old app, I think you'll definitely like the new one even better.
Multiple Extensions
Soon after releasing 1Blocker in 2015 and adding more features (Whitelist, Hide Elements, Make HTTPS, iCloud sync, etc.) and extending our rule sets, we found out that we are about to hit the limit of total number of rules allowed for a Safari content blocker extension. Apple set the limit at 50K rules, and we were already at 49K.
We wanted to block more unwanted content and keep adding more features, but were frustrated by the limit of 50K rules.
The only solution to that problem is to create multiple extensions within 1Blocker that independently manage blocking in Safari. However, that requires rewriting the app to handle all these new extensions.
It took me six months to move from a single extension to seven independent content blocker extensions, while still keeping the advanced customizability our app provided. I'm proud to say that 1Blocker X is able to contain up to 350K rules now thanks to its seven new extensions. No other native Safari content blocker in the App Store is as powerful as 1Blocker X.
Besides better content blocking, there are many other benefits of having multiple extensions.
Partial Whitelist
One of the most requested features is partial whitelist.
What is a partial whitelist? Let's say, you open cool-blog.com and want to keep blocking trackers but unblock ads and comments on that site. It's not possible to do this using our old app.
We couldn't implement this feature in the old app because it had only one extension. Apple's whitelist rules are called 'ignore previous rules'. So it's not possible to ignore only some of the previous rules in a single extension.
But having multiple extensions, we can now create 'ignore-previous' rules for those extensions that only need to be disabled.
So in the example above, we would need to create 'ignore-previous' rules for cool-blog.com and add them only to 'Block Ads' and 'Block Comments' extensions.
Partial whitelist is coming soon in a future update.
Custom rules won't break all blocking
Another common issue that our old app had was that when Safari can't compile your custom rules (because of incorrect syntax or format), it would break all blocking. In the new 1Blocker X, our built-in rules are in separate extensions and your custom rules cannot affect them.
You can import up to 50K custom rules
In 1Blocker X, your custom rules are inside their own extension. That means you can import to 1Blocker custom third-party lists of rules made by other people on the Internet. This is a great way of extending default lists in 1Blocker.
Better performance
Because rules are split into multiple extensions, it takes less time for Safari to compile rules when you are changing your blocking preferences. In some cases, disabling or adding a new rule is instantaneous.
Country-specific rules
1Blocker X introduces a new, country-specific category of blockers. Currently, there are only two countries in the list but we are planning to grow it. These rules improve ad blocking experience for users in listed countries.
Face/Touch ID protection
A lot of parents asked us to add Face/Touch ID protection. They use 1Blocker to block adult and other harmful sites for their kids. By enabling Face/Touch ID, parents can protect their blocking preferences from being changed by their kids.
Improved rule set
We have enhanced our rule set by extending existing groups of blockers and including new ones. The total number of rules have grown from 49K to 120K.
Block Ads (47.8K rules)
Primary group of blockers that remove most ads from sites.
Block Trackers (13.3K rules)
Protect your personal data by blocking all forms of tracking scripts and data collectors.
Block Annoyances (39.7K rules)
Block social media widgets, cookie notices, share bars, crypto-miners, etc.
Block Comments (262 rules)
Block comments on many popular sites where they aren't the primary focus.
Block Adult Sites (3.7K rules)
Protect your kids by blocking adult sites.
Block German Ads (6.1K rules)
Block Russian Ads (10.2K rules)
New design
We didn't redesign the app for the sake of it. The new user interface takes what has already been great in the old app and adds improvements in other aspects where it wasn't. Overall, the new app is easier to use and provides a better experience.

In 1Blocker the following switches were enabled: Block Ads, Block Trackers, Block Annoyances.
Since the release of the original app in 2015, we had one single in-app purchase and never asked for more money. Many Safari content blockers died off during these 2.5 years. Some of them promised a Mac version and never shipped it. Many of them were simply abandoned.
But we kept working on our app and released new features.
I'm an indie developer, not a big company with lots of people and products. I make money only by selling this app on the App Store. Obviously, I can't update the app for free forever.
1Blocker X has no subscriptions and in-purchases. It's a one-time purchase ($4.99) that will last you for years, like the old app did (for 2.5 years).
You can continue using the old app if you wish to not upgrade right away. 1Blocker Legacy will still receive updates to our rule sets. We are not removing it from the App Store. Legacy app will still work as it did before.

There are also free alternatives. You can switch to another app/company if you think their app works better.
Next time you feel the urge to complain about a paid upgrade, consider the people behind it and support them, and if you don't want to, don't. But there's no need to call them greedy assholes, because they're not.

1blocker App
If you think 1Blocker X is worth the upgrade and you want us to keep working on it, we are currently doing pre-order for $4.99 (30% sale) on the App Store.
After you update to 1Blocker X all your custom rules, including Whitelist, will be available in the new app, thanks to our iCloud synchronization. It's even possible to sync the rules between the old and the new app via iCloud.
We recommend to remove the old app after installing the X on your device.
We have no plans to ship a major update to 1Blocker for Mac, so it will stay the same at 50K rules.
